From the Darkness (1/17/10 Afghanistan Head-Lines)

THE NATION The Shadow War Tom Engelhardt & Nick Turse The secret war that lies behind the CIA's recent intelligence disaster in Afghanistan. We were warned by the slogging retreat of the bear, the escape from the mountains and caves, leaving shadows of our making in a proud and mournful beam. Two Blackwater Guards Arrested on Murder Charges Jeremy Scahill : Blackwater The Blackwater guards are charged with killing two Afghan civilians in May 2009. Amid our insolence, murderers pinched the flame. We’ve made our way to the gallows, heads bent, war has given birth to our shame. Blackwater and the Khost Bombing: Is the CIA Deceiving Congress? Jeremy Scahill : Blackwater Two Blackwater contractors died in a December 30 suicide bombing at a CIA station in Afghanistan, suggesting that the company is more enmeshed in CIA business than the agency admits. Onward into another secret, a new shadow, up, up, up. Beckoning our weary and exposed legs the dismal general com...

O! Machines of Blood! (Saturday 1/16/10 Head-Lines)

Haiti: Up to 200,000 feared dead Where are your ancestors? When will this throbbing subside? Why do the talons inject their agony inside the tattered bone? (Words shall never hold you as dear.) UN launches Haiti relief appeal When they did wake they began to sing. They began to chant their fortune over corpses, stepping carefully so as not to nudge them. Though they bid them rise… their beauty remained. Quake Prompts Respite For Haitians Illegally In U.S. Go home when time drifts over your land, return to the sun when the ground is made whole and peace puts her warm hands upon your mournful eyes. Outside Port-au-Prince, 'towns are absolutely destroyed' O famished ministers of grief, sinister murderers of time, hold your blood machine until they’ve chance to weep, cease your plowing until their graves are made deep. Angry Haitians Take to Street as Relief Trickles In Like a dog alone in a cage does make such piteous clamor when no one appears to be coming- they s...

The Land Will Vomit You Out and Whatever

ANMWE.COM PAT ROBERTSON: “Something happened a long time ago in Haiti and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever ... And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, “We will serve you if you get us free from the prince.” True story. And so the devil said, “OK, it’s a deal.” They kicked the French out, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other, desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It’s cut down the middle, on the one side is Haiti, on the other side is the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have, and we need to pray for them, a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy I’m optimistic something good may come. But right now, we’re helping the suffering people and the suffer...

Where is Our Joy?

Justice Denied: Eight Years and Counting Speak justice. Bend the light of horror, anguish. Ingest it, cry out. This is barrenness. Empty and cold, it should move us to heartache. Fearing all, the sunrise of love is too sinister to smile upon us. They walk on our floors of ruin, kneel upon our miserable hearts and sleep confined to our bitterness. If we, the loveless, barren and cruel, shackle and cage men’s hearts, why then are we not happy? © 2010 by mark prime

A Vow of Sanity (1/10/10 Head-Lines)

NYT: Feds hid truth about immigrant jail deaths These ghosts without features or moans have not found us sleeping, not like a terrorist whose shadows readily snuggle up to our doubts bringing us to such savagery and screeching piteous damnation! Not these hidden specters, they’re use is for our future dread. 'CIA bomber' vowed revenge How can there be a call for god-fowled revenge when we've done nothing to inflame them? How can we counter such murderous rage of our innocence, when we’re blameless, righteous, perfect, loving, divine, sympathetic, inspiring, honorable, noble and kind? For Top Bonuses on Wall Street, 7 Figures or 8? Numbers. Numbers. Numbers. Numbers. All these damned numbers! They’re useless and stolen. Obama launches new push for healthcare overhaul They still want to murder the goodness that is ready. We’ll just stand around pointing as the shots are fired so as to not feel the gaping wounds or see the gushing blood, but, and this is signific...

Born to Hate

Almost a year ago the inauguration of President Barack Obama was hailed as a turning point in US race relations. The country was said to be entering a new era of post-racial politics, on the path to a future of greater diversity and tolerance. But while crowds flocked to Washington to witness the swearing in, others were refusing to join the party. Racially motivated threats against Obama rose to new heights in the first months of his presidency, with the US seeing nine high-profile race killings in 2009. Meanwhile white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups claim their membership is growing and that visits to their websites are increasing. Filmmakers Rick Rowley and Jacquie Soohen went inside the white nationalist movement to investigate. To these hearts, the country, to our hurry, the march of white-knuckled thrumming and fury to the backdrop of primitive chords. These ashen weapons, these preemptive skins, most restless. One lockstep forward, two locks...

Pale Use

Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only person officially recognized as a survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings at the end of World War II, has died at age 93. Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on a business trip for his shipbuilding company on Aug. 6, 1945, when a U.S. B-29 dropped an atomic bomb on the city. He suffered serious burns to his upper body and spent the night in the city. He then returned to his hometown of Nagasaki, about 300 kilometers (190 miles) to the southwest, which suffered a second U.S. atomic bomb attack three days later. ( Read Full Story by The Associated Press ) PALE USE For it did make him that day and a shriek did blow a hole in his sky, pushing a countless death behind shrunk of its breadth like a child in the darkness floating downward to breathe all the names bringing the dead to call out in the flames. No! No! No! No! Hear them wail. Hear them cry. Hear them shriek as the wind lifts them hom...
